Olds Town Council reviewed a request submitted by Garth Lucas, Director of Corporate Services, to increase the cost of the blue bin recycling program from $2.00 per resident charged during the pilot program to $3.50 to cover the cost of the program for the entire community. Councillor Mary Jane Harper expressed concern that the service didn’t start until May but the fee increase was to show up on resident’s utility bills on April 1st. Olds Town Council voted on the motion to delay the fee increase from April 1st to May 1st saving residents approximately $5,400.00. We spoke with Garth Lucas after the meeting about the recycling program and the reason for the rate increase. The blue bin recycling pilot program was successful in reducing the amount of waste being trucked to the landfill and was well received by the community. Town Council moved that the program be delivered to the entire community in the fall of 2013. Mr. Lucas also clarified that the reason for an increase in water rates of 5 cents per cubic meter was due to an increase from the Regional Water Commission and the Town was passing the increase onto the residents as of April 1st.
