Meet the Olds Town Council – Mary Jane Harper

Mary Jane is in her third term as councillor for the Town of Olds, having first been acclaimed in 2008. A native of Olds, she has served as a volunteer on a number of local boards and committees for years, including Olds FCSS, Olds Institute for Community and Regional Development, and the 2005 Olds Centennial Homecoming. She is a founding member and current director of the Olds and District Christmas Angels Society. Mary Jane’s previous political experience includes six years as Olds School trustee to Mountain View County School Board and one term as an elected board member of the Olds and District Hospital. On the provincial scene, Mary Jane served as a director of the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association for a period of 12 years and was elected president 2001. In 2007, she began a three year appointment as the public board member to the Alberta Press Council. Mary Jane was a former co–owner with siblings, in the third generation family owned community newspaper “The Olds Gazette”, where she served as editor, staff writer and photojournalist until the sale of the newspaper to a major corporation in 2005. In 2006 Mary Jane began a new career, as a licensed realtor working with Royal LePage Wildrose Real Estate. This new career has been both challenging and rewarding. Mary Jane enjoys spending her free time with her three married children and their families.
