The Olds High School Drama Club, under the direction of teacher Rhonda West will be recreating the Battle of Olds at the TransCanada Theatre in Olds on Saturday, Feb. 28 and on Sunday, March 1st. The original battle which was a dispute between Olds citizens and Canadian Pacific Railway occurred on June 3rd 1907. The battle was over a crossing, north of what is now 49th Street that the town had built and funded but the CPR wanted removed after initial approval was given. The Battle of Olds ended after the arrest of several citizens, including Mayor Billy Dean and most of the town council when Inspector Duffus of the Mounted Police read the Riot Act, threatening to give the order to shoot. In 2005 local storyteller Mary Hays was commissioned to create a script for a play which was performed in a Olds school. We spoke with Olds High School drama teacher Rhonda West at the Mountain View Museum.
The Olds Historical Society, Uptowne Olds and the Town of Olds will all be involved in making the play happen. To celebrate the event The Olds Historical Society will transform the theatre lobby into period time with exhibits and members dressed in period costumes. We also spoke with story teller and playwright Mary Hays.
Tickets are available online at http://www.kiwanis.org /concert.htm or at the Mountain View Museum located at 5038 50 Street, in Uptowne Olds
